Great Canadian Rivers
In Canada, our rivers are inextricably linked to our past, and to our identity. First Nations used them for travel, to mark territory and to provide for their people. European adventurers followed these same pathways and used them as avenues of trade and inroads to settlement. Modern adventurers seek out rivers to explore the Canadian wilderness, and to re-live a Canadian tradition.
Our great rivers provide a window onto the vastness and diversity of the Canadian landscape. Our rivers wind through mountains and tundra, salt marshes and vast plateaus. Grizzly bears ply their waters for salmon, pelicans nest on rocky islets, and caribou herds follow ancient river crossings.
Today, our rivers echo their colourful pasts, and faithfully balance their duties of the present. They are a study in contrasts. Rivers surge over artificial dams and carry millions of pounds of freight; yet they retain their power and wildness. Our rivers ring with the voices of our ancestors, and are the last vestiges of our great wilderness.
GREAT CANADIAN RIVERS features 13 rivers that represent both the natural and cultural heritage of Canada. Each half-hour episode focuses on one river. They represent a variety of landscapes, regions and stories; and be a balance of wilderness rivers and ‘working rivers.’
